GATE 2016 Exam Date Notification and Paper Code Wise

GATE 2016 Syllabus exam pattern and Corresponding Code


1) Examinations for all the 22 papers will be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT). The online examination paper will contain some questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad

2) Biometric information (Photograph and Fingerprints) for randomly selected candidates may be captured before the start of the exam

3) GATE 2016 is Exam date to be conducted between January 30 and February 7, 2016


The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE:

B.E./B.Tech//B.Pharma: Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/ Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after Diploma in Engineering/Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs [Description of Eligible Candidates: Currently in the final year or already completed]

B.Arch: Bachelor’s degree holders of Architecture (Five years course) [Description of Eligible Candidates: Currently in the final year or already completed]

B.Sc (Research)/ B.S: Bachelor’s degree in Science (Post-Diploma/ 4 years after 10+2)

M.Sc/ M.A/MCA or equivalent: Master’s degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications or equivalent

Integrated M.E/ M.Tech (Post-B.Sc): Post-BSc Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering / Technology (Four year program)

Integrated M.E/ M.Tech or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2): Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering / Technology (Five year program)

Integrated M.Sc/ Int. B.S.-M.S: Integrated M.Sc. or Five year integrated B.S.-M.S program

Professional Society Examinations (equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch): B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch. equivalent examinations, of Professional Societies, recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE (e.g., AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India) [Description of

Eligible Candidates: Completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses]

In case a candidate has passed one of the qualifying examinations as mentioned above in 2015 or earlier, the candidate has to submit the degree certificate/provisional certificate/course completion certificate/professional certificate/membership certificate issued by the society or institute

In case, the candidate is expected to complete to complete one of the qualifying criteria in 2016 or later as mentioned above, he/she has to submit a certificate from Principal or a copy of marks card for section A of AMIE

Design of gate question papers :

The questions in a paper may be designed to test the following abilities:

  1. i) Recall: These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from one‐line computation
  2. ii) Comprehension:These questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas

Marking Scheme

For 1 mark multiplechoice questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2mark multiple‐choice questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions

General Aptitude (GA) Questions

In all papers, GA questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1mark each (sub‐total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2marks each (sub‐total 10 marks)

Candidates must familiarize with the paper code for the paper of their choice, as this knowledge will be required at the time of application form submission and appearing for the examination

A candidate is allowed to appear in ONLY ONE paper

Since a candidate is allowed to appear in ONLY ONE of the 23 papers for which GATE 2016 examination is being held, the candidate has to make the choice of the paper he/she wishes to write carefully

Question Answers on GATE EXAM

Question: What are the benefits for gate exam passed students?

Answer: The benefits of writing GATE Exam are –

  1. Primarily helpful of entrance to the higher studies like M.tech, ME etc
  2. Some PSU’s also take GATE score and on its basis select candidates for the interview for various good grade jobs. Companies like NTPC, BHEL and IOCL have said so for the year 2012

Question: What is the eligibility and age limit to appear for GATE exam?

Answer: GATE is conducted jointly by the IIT and IIS, one must hold a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology or in Architecture. As far age limit is concerned, there is no age limit to apply for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

Answer: You can start your preparation from 2nd year of B.E /B. tech. A few tips are:

  1. Prepare notes after finishing every chapter. This will help you during your last days of revision.
  2. Maintain formulas, short-cuts and tips/tricks in notes.
  3. Solve previous years’ GATE papers: Solving previous years’ papers gives you a fair idea of about the actual paper.
  4. Solve as many test papers as possible.

Answer: GATE exam is conducted once in a year.

Question: What is the process for applying GATE 2016?

Answer: Candidates need to register and fill the application online only by accessing the zonal GATE websites of IISc and seven IITs. The application process is complete only when a print out of the filled online application with the candidate’s signature.

Though GATE exam is out of 100 marks, GATE score is calculated out of 1000, by extrapolating the GATE exam score using factors like mean, standard deviation of all applicant scores.
